Policy

ACT supports the UC Policies regarding Alternate Work Schedules. For the purpose of this policy, alternate work schedules are defined as flexible work hours and telecommuting. ACT management is responsible for approving and monitoring alternate work schedules, and for setting and monitoring employee performance standards. Privileges under this policy may be modified as circumstances change. Union represented employee privileges are also subject to bargaining unit agreements.

Scope

All ACT personnel.

Responsibilities

  • The Assistant Vice Chancellor of ACT is responsible for the overall setting of workplace policies for ACT. Those policies shall be compatible with UCSD policy.
  • ACT Managers are responsible for communicating, administering, and enforcing University/ACT policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Staff of ACT are responsible for adherence to policies, procedures and regulations.
Flexible Work Hours

For non-exempt staff, alternate work schedules shall consist of 40 hours in one designated workweek. For exempt staff, alternate work schedules shall consist of 80 hours in two consecutive workweeks. Exceptions to the 8-hour daily work schedule will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Overtime for an employee with an alternate work schedule shall be in accordance with UC policy governing overtime.

Telecommuting

Employees participating in telecommuting must have appropriate equipment as determine by management on a case by case basis.

    A. For employees whom management has directed mandatory participation, ACT shall pay all associated telecommuting costs and/or provide the necessary computing tools.

    B. For employees who seek to voluntarily participate, each Director within ACT shall determine the extent, if any, used computing tools be loaned to the employee by ACT. Service and support of such loaned equipment will the sole responsibility of the employee. The equipment must be returned to ACT upon request or when the employee leaves ACT.

    C. ACT will pay for Internet access for all its employees who use UCSD's Network Operations as their Internet service provider.

    D. Employees approved to receive ACT provided software, can bring their PC to a designated ACT work location to have the installation performed by the appropriate ACT personnel.

      Telecommuting procedures

      The UCSD Human Resources (HR) document "Telecommuting: A Skills Guide for Supervisors and their remote workers" serves as the ACT procedural document for telecommuting. Copies are available through the ACT Managers as well as HR. This document will be referenced online when it becomes available.

      The UCSD Standard Departmental Telecommuting Guidelines materials are required to be read and filled out. These agreements are between requesting staff and their Managers. Managers will notify the ACT Personnel Manager in advance of their approval.
