PPS (Payroll /Personnel System) Technical Overview
PPS comprises computer-based processes and applications that support the administration of employee-related information for the UCSD Campus and Medical Center.
Processes and applications: The following services and features are available through PPS. Many of them are included in EmployeeLink.
- Employee Database and Table Maintenance
- Payroll Time Collection
- Payroll, Benefit, and Tax Computation
- Payroll Disbursement
- Payroll Cost Distribution
- Leave Accrual
- Personnel Reporting
- Personnel Histories
- External Interfaces
Development projects at UCSD:
- Departmental Time-Data Entry: The direct entry of payroll time-data by departmental timekeepers and eventually by employees themselves.
- Departmental Employee Action History: A web-based inquiry process designed to be used by campus departments and by central offices, to display the history of changes to individual employee records.
- Departmental Merit Entry: The Merit Entry facility allows qualified staff to enter evaluation and merit-increase information for eligible personnel.
Maintenance and local enhancements: The University of California, Office of the President (UCOP) maintains PPS in the form of a "base", or standard, version of the system. In addition to this role as steward of the system, UCOP also operates the system on its own IBM MVS platform on behalf of four of the nine UC campuses. The remaining five campuses, including UCSD, maintain and operate versions of the standard system on their own IBM MVS platforms.
All campuses alter or extend the base PPS for local use. UCSD has always supported a relatively large set of local modifications, many of which are required to support the local financial Chart of Account (COA) structures in the IFIS system. These are very different from the standard UCOP COA structures in the base PPS.

Service mechanism: ACT Operations provides service on the IBM ES, primarily via online access through CICS. The system is written in COBOL II and uses DB2. The PPS Server ("Hollerith") supplies server support for some processes . This is a Sun SPARC-Server 1000E with 4x processors, 512MB memory, and 100GB of RAID disk storage.
Contact your Departmental Security Administrator (DSA) if you need access to PPS or EmployeeLink.
