 Kerr Effect
 
      A change in rotation of light reflected off a magnetic field. The
      polarity of a magneto-optic bit causes the laser to shift one
      degree clockwise or counterclockwise.

      To enter data.
 
 key pulsing (KP)
 
      System of sending telephone calling signals in which digits are
      transmitted using pushbuttons.
 
 key service unit (KSU)
 
      The main operating unit of a key telephone system.
 
 key system
 
      The equipment utilized to provide the features associated with
      keysets, including the multipair cable, key service unit, and
      distribution frames.
 
 key telephone system
 
      A system that provides direct selection of an outside line from a
      multiline telephone set; such functions as line holding and
      intercommunications are selected at the instrument. Visual
      indications are given on the status of each line associated with
      the instrument. See also EKTS.
 
 keyboard dialing -- data adapter
 
      Facility that initiates data and voice calls from data terminal
      equipment through a data adapter.
 
 keyboard send/receive (KSR)
 
      A combination teletypewriter transmitter and receiver with a
      keyboard which is only capable of transmission.
 
 keyframe
 
      A frame that indicates the beginning or end of an object in motion.
 
 keying (modem)
 
      Process of modulating a carrier signal to encode binary
      information. Keying in modems is normally performed by changing the
      frequency or phase of the carrier signal.
 
 keyset
 
      The telephone instrument having the appearance of two or more
      telephone lines that are accessible by depressing a button (key) on
      the face of the set.
 
 keystone
 
      A monitor distortion where one end of the screen - either side to
      side, or top to bottom - is larger than the other end.
 
 keyword
 
      A word, number or phrase associated with a document to aid in its
      retrieval from storage.
