Quarterly Status Report - Departmental Version

October - December, 1995

The Strategic Projects Team (SPT) has made substantial progress in meeting its charter and goals. SPT has focused this quarter on issues central to the longer term goals of ACT. These involve the serving of data from all central sources to the campus via the World Wide Web (Web), the transition to development tools supporting the Web, the training of ACT staff in the new technologies, and the options, issues, and efforts involved with rehosting of the core systems to other software and hardware platforms.

To be successful in these areas, SPT plans to leverage current systems, staff, and expertise to rapidly deliver these services to the campus, while planning for the necessary technical staff training. This has involved attending seminars, setting up training, vendor consultations, tool discovery and review, and intense review of the developments on the Web and within other institutions pursuing similar goals.

SPT has coordinated the acquisition and installation of a series of Computer-Based Training (CBT) courses on UNIX and Sybase for ACT staff. These courses will be made available to the entire Vice-Chancellor Business Affairs (VCBA) organization. As a result of the CASE committee recommendations, S-Designor has been licensed and installed in ACT for use by Database Administration and the development staff.

SPT worked closely with Database Administration, Operations, Customer Services and Development managers to develop the blueprint for the "Database (Sybase) Processing Environments". This initial document describes the environmental issues, and specifies responsibilities of the ACT support groups.

SPT completed a Migration And Planning Session (MAPS) with Forecross Corporation. This effort reviewed all ISIS and IFIS database structures and source code to determine the viability and effort required to rehost them to SQL-compatible database environments on various hardware platforms. We are currently in the process of reviewing and discussing the options and issues surrounding such an undertaking. The primary focus is on preserving the current process functionality while implementing SQL compatible platforms.

SPT is coordinating the migration of existing production documentation to a Web-based environment, making it accessible by staff responsible for the coordination of production activities. This effort is expected to be completed by the end of this quarter.

SPT has enrolled in the Netscape Development Partners program and is actively reviewing Web application development platforms. These include Perl, TCL, Livewire, Java, the IBM MVS server, the University of Delaware Interpretive Server, and other product releases. We are looking for new ways to provide access and rapidly deliver central data to the campus. SPT continues to provide leadership, coordination, and training in the implementation and use of the World Wide Web within ACT. The Web Application Development (WebAD) forum meets regularly to discuss methodology and technology, as well as receiving briefings on various Web topics.

The Strategic Projects team will be redefining their goals and activities for the next year, and recommending a change in charter to pursue the development, implementation, and delivery of pilot projects which demonstrate and make initial progress into new information DELIVERY technologies. Once proven, the ACT core systems support staff will follow with the production implementation of these services.
